CalSpeed SKUSA – Freddie Slater

It was Freddie’s opportunity to stretch his legs in a Junior X30 kart last weekend in California, USA. Although only a very young 10 year old Freddie got offered the chance to be able to race in the Skusa Protour because of his success in the 2018 season. The Calspeed circuit is part of a Speedway complex in a town called Fontana. A very physical track Freddie would have his work cut out to compete in what was his hardest challenge to date.

Practice provided very short sessions of only 7 minutes. The competition had been testing the week before so Freddie used his time to catch up to the ‘faster more experienced’ drivers. Making progress each time in his driving in combination with the team working hard to sort the equipment Freddie was climbing up the time sheets. Ending day one just outside the top ten.

After what was technically his first day in a junior kart Freddie was working hard to get to the top. The first time session of the day came in the afternoon where Freddie put in an incredible lap to position himself 2nd in the rankings. The heavens opened on Saturday in what was supposed to be ‘the driest state in America’. Torrential downpour over night and into the day meant round one of the Protour would be complete qualifying and two finals on the Saturday. An average qualifying meant Freddie would climb up in the prefinal all the way to 10th position proving his speed to come through the big field of 45. Starting 10th Freddie got to work and with some very stern overtaking manoeuvrers amazingly crossing the line 4th. A massive achievement for the youngest driver on the grid by far.

Happy with his result the day before Freddie’s confidence was at an all time high. Qualifying was on wet tyres and with great positioning Freddie managed to produce the 3rd fastest lap. The prefinal was tough over 12 laps but this didn’t stop Freddie battling with his competitors in the close racing he finished 2nd. A front row start for his first ever Junior race!!

The final over 20 laps didn’t fail to deliver after a great start Freddie slotted into second and the took the lead after the first lap. After some close racing Freddie was 2nd on the last lap until contact from behind finished his race. Very unfortunate for Freddie after what can only be described as a breath taking performance. On his return to America he will be sure to settle the scores and achieve that podium result he deserved.
