Buckmore Club – Freddie Slater

After a relaxed Easter break, Freddie was straight back to it, competing at the Buckmore Park circuit in Kent. Featuring as a key track in his bambino career, Freddie was looking forward to showing his ability here in his rookie year of the Iame cadet class. Friday practice started with a bang. Freddie was straight to the top of the time sheet and maintained it throughout the day. Freddie style of driving was working at this circuit and his raw speed reflected this. Another test day on the Saturday was equally successful however the rest of the grid closed the gap to his him and his team mate Taylor Barnard. It was going to be a hard and close race.

With a different schedule for a club race there was: Qualify, Heat one, Prefinal and Final.
Qualify was only 6 minutes and Freddie was fast. Hitting traffic on the last two laps refused the youngster of showing his full potential and 5th quickest was the best he could manage. However he knew his pace was much quicker. Heat one was a mixed bag, getting loaded of the track at the start Freddie fought back to an amazing 6th spot with impressive overtaking on the way. However a nose cone penalty no fault of his own meant a 10 second penalty that positioned him 18th.

Starting the prefinal 18th Freddie climbed to 11th position. With such a competitive grid it was hard to make progress. The final was over 8 minutes and Freddie’s team had made changes to the kart in order to improve the speed for the final. With a difficult start Freddie lost the front pack, however over 5 laps worked very hard to catch them from over 4 seconds behind. Posting fast laps Freddie showed determination to reduce the deficit. Running out of time Freddie crossed the line 8th. The weekend showed the punishing effect of the nose cone penalty rule however he showed good pace for the O plate competition there in 2 weeks.
