Fulbeck Super One – Freddie Slater

The fourth round of the British Championship was held at the Fulbeck circuit in Lincolnshire. Having raced here when he was 7 with a lot of success, Freddie was looking forward the big event at one of his favourite tracks. Testing went smooth as Freddie got to grips with the track after some time out from the venue. In Friday testing the team tried various set up with Freddie’s kart to get it dialled into the short narrow circuit, known for its difficult chicanes; its a track that gives no room for error.

Qualifying in Super one this year has been difficult for Freddie and he’s often fallen short getting the perfect lap on the time sheet. Working with his team mates Freddie managed to get the perfect chase and cross the line in 4th position. A strong qualifying from such a close grid. Although 4th was a high position this gave Freddie the outside starting position that at this track turned out detrimental for anyone on the outside row. Getting caught in heat one at the start Freddie got knocked back to 29th place and with immaculate overtaking and decision making Freddie recovered to 10th with the 3rd fastest lap. Similarly in the second heat disaster struck at the first corner dropping Freddie to the back of the pack . Later in the race an incident happened at the top corner that not only catapulted Freddie towards the barrier but also dropped his nosecone giving him a penalty. Disappointed with his starting position for the first final, Freddie was keen to show he can come back from this bad run of luck.

A continuing pattern occurred in the prefinal where Freddie got spun again at the start. Still never giving up, Freddie recovered from 30th position to 19th in the 10 minute race. With the weekend going from bad to worse the main final was the time for Freddie to recover some championship points. Starting on the inside gave Freddie a better start and his first few laps showed his intent to progress in the race. Closing down the front pack Freddie’s momentum achieved 7th place and showed although the weekend was looking like a write off Freddie was able to dig deep and demonstrate a quality recovery drive in the main final.
