LGM Whilton Mill – Freddie Slater

Round 5 of the Little Green Man championship was held at Freddie’s home track Whilton in Daventry. Once again Saturday practice was faced with mixed weather conditions. Well within the top few fastest in testing and especially quick in the drizzling conditions, Freddie was confident for Sunday’s race day. Different to the British Championship, there is no qualifying and points for the heats. So Freddie would have mixed grid positions in the 3 heats before the grand final.

Heat 1 was tough as Freddie didn’t have the pace he fell back from the leaders; however with determination he gained positions in the last lap to finish 3rd. A fine display of defensive driving for a young talent. Heat 2 saw Freddie climb from 17th to 10th with some hard battles along the way. Heat 3 Freddie started in last position and progressed to 15th falling short of a last lap battle with against a group of other drivers. With a slight lack of pace to Freddie’s normal, the team made major changes for the final where Freddie started in 8th position. A position that he could easily get himself into the front pack.

The Final went well to start with for Freddie as he was happy with the changes the team made and drove a perfect start getting himself into the top 3! Working with a group of 5 other karts they started battling with 2 minutes to go in the race; somewhat early for a cadet race. However contact from another driver pushed Freddie towards the grass and he fell back to 8th place. Managing to get back to 7th across the line, it was unfortunate that Freddie fell short of the contact but in such close racing there is always a risk of this. After another short break in Mallorca, Freddie returns next week for the next double header round at one of his favourite tracks Rowrah in Cumbria.
