Shenington Club Race – Freddie Slater

With Round 5 of the Super One series being held at the Shenington Kart Club this coming July, this weekend Freddie and his team took the opportunity to test at the Banbury circuit. Competing in his second novice race, his brother Alfie was excited to drive this different track. Saturday practice was dry and hot, over six sessions the team were taking time to test some new engines to bring on for the rest of the season. Trying different carburetors and chassis set ups, Freddie although not the outright fastest was within touching distance of the front.

Heat one Freddie started p7 and lost ground at the start however managed to get back to 4th. With the leading pack already pushing away it was hard to catch up to the front due to pushing his own air. A collision in the second heat with close friend Brandon Carr knocked Freddie back to 5th from 2nd position in heat 2. Heat 3 saw Freddie have a great start and climb a massive 16 places to finish 2nd after a great battle. Although with a few disruptions Freddie still managed to qualify 4th for the final.

With everyone’s pace very similar it was going to be a tough battle in the final. In an exciting 10 laps Freddie got into the lead of the race, but then found himself getting ran off the track coming out of the hairpin, in turn dropping him back into the pack. Never giving up Freddie got back to 3rd and was prevented from making more progress as defensive driving became an obstacle. With changes made for the final improving Freddie’s kart he was happy to come away with another podium. Alfie managed to make the A final which was a great achievement at such a competitive race meeting.

Freddie & Alfie will now enjoy some time off on a family holiday with the new addition to the Slater family – Baby Brother Bobby.
