Super One GYG – Freddie Slater

Last time at GYG, events on track restricted Freddie from his normal podium finish. However returning last weekend for the Super One British championship was Freddie’s chance to demonstrate his skill round the North Wales circuit. Working hard with mid week testing Freddie and his team had prepared the best they could for the important race. This shone through in Friday practice as Freddie was setting the pace within the Fusion awning and the rest of the competitors.

Qualifying went well and Freddie managed 4th position without getting the best slip stream, so his pace was strong. Keen to gain the championship points Freddie’s heat went to plan after strong battles on the last lap of both races. With fastest lap in heat 1 Freddie demonstrated his intent for the Sunday finals. Starting 3rd on the grid gave him good inside position and a nice haul of points.

Final 1 and Final 2 happened in similar fashion. Working with team mate Taylor Barnard the pair were able to break away from the rest of the squabbling field behind. Creating the perfect duo they opened up a 3 and 6 second lead. The second final saw a close battle from the two teammates but an ambitious move from Freddie in the last few corners was soon cut off by Barnard. However the 2nd place finishes combined with the strong heats have given Freddie’s championship campaign a massive boost. For an 8 year old to be standing on the 2nd place spot on the podium is a massive achievement and this result will only increase Freddie’s confidence for the rest of the session.
