Wackersdorf X30 Euro – Freddie Slater

As the championship leader, Freddie travelled to Germany to partake in round 3 of the Iame X30 Euro Series. Freddie was motivated by the challenge of a full grid of international drivers and a new circuit to learn. Held at Pro-Kart in Wackersdorf, Germany this race would provide a great penultimate round of the European Championship. Completing a two day test the weekend before Freddie was ready and full of confidence at this circuit.

Returning back to Germany on the Wednesday, Freddie and his team prepared for the week ahead. A solid days practice Thursday put Freddie at the top of the time sheets. He knew could provide the results in the Friday qualification with his pace. In the short 6 minute qualifying Freddie came a very close 2nd missing the pole by 2 thousandths of a second. Freddie didn’t fail to deliver in the heat races. Although starting from the outside his assertive starts put him into the front pack in every heat. Although winning every heat Freddie was penalised in heat one for overtaking on a yellow flag giving him a 10 second penalty. This knocked him down to 23rd position. So with two wins and  a 23rd Freddie started 7th for the prefinal race.

An astonishing start in the prefinal put Freddie into 3rd place when the ‘slow board’ came out due to an accident. As the karts slowed some engines began to fail due to the slow pace. Freddie’s starts to fail as well and as the team panicked he managed to regain all power to complete the restart. But it meant him restarting in 7th place down the order. In the best 4 laps of his racing career Freddie managed to work his way up through the pack and in the very last corner attacked both leaders to cross the line in 1st. An amazing recovery after what would have been a disaster for the 10 year old and his championship contention. The main final went more smoothly; a lights to flag victory for Freddie after some clever last lap defensive driving means Freddie would be very hard to catch in the European X30 series. The final round will take place in Salbris France where the Championship will be decided.
