WSK Championship – Adria – Freddie Slater

The 2020 season started with the World Karting Series Champions Cup at Adria International raceway. After graduating to the most elite junior karting category in the world Freddie was keen to impress at the international level. In his new team colours of Ricky Flynn Motorsport Freddie proved his intentions in the pre season testing across a handful of Italian Circuits.

Practice sessions started Thursday where Freddie completed five long sessions in order to perfect the set up and prepare for the race weekend ahead. Still learning a lot Freddie took small improvements each time to climb the time sheets post practice. Friday Morning saw huge progress for Freddie where he jumped straight to the top of the time sheets just in time for qualifying.

Finding it difficult to find a clear position in qualifying Freddie’s last lap was posted as his best. Although only achieving 11th in group that placed Freddie 9th for the heats, a perfect place to attack the front runners.

The heats went very smoothly and in a very controlled manner Freddie gained good points for the prefinal ending up 10th in the intermediate classification. Freddie would start Fifth for the Pre Final B.

On the inside for the prefinal was a perfect position and this proved to pay off as a strong start meant Freddie would work his way up the grid. With strong pace Freddie cruised to second place showing great race craft and tyre management in drying conditions. With a great set up from his new team he was able to post the fastest lap whilst catching the leader. A thumbs up from Freddie over the line meant he was pleased with his efforts and would line up P3 for his first ever international Junior OK race.

The track was dry for the final with a few damp patches. It was slick tyres for the first time in a few days. Freddie drove a great start catching the leaders and posting purple sectors on the way. With some very close racing in difficult conditions Freddie ended up 8th across the line. This weekend saw massive progress from the 11 year old and starting 3rd in the final for his first ever OKJ was definitely a highlight. Freddie looks forward to returning to the track in 3 days in compete in the first round of the WSK Masters series.
