X30 Euro at Salbris – Freddie Slater

X30 Euro at Salbris

Freddie and his team travelled to Salbris France for the finale of the IAME Euro Series. Having a strong hold on the championship meant Freddie wanted to finish it off in style by winning the race and the Championship. Knowing that Salbris has been on the racing calendar in European karting for a number for years Freddie was looking forward to learning the very technical and unforgiving French circuit. Not testing the weekend before gave Freddie an extra challenge to step up to plate and learn the track in just 9 short sessions prior to qualifying Friday.

With various drivers showing speed in practice Freddie and his team systematically worked through the equipment as Freddie finessed the track. There were 3-4 drivers capable of a fast lap time so when it came down to qualifying everyone knew it would be close. Freddie’s organisation in qualifying was impeccable as he created the perfect gap to the driver in front when the tyres were at their best. With his head down Freddie drove the perfect lap and qualified pole by 2 tenths, a very significant margin in this category.

The heats offered exciting starts as Freddie managed those behind him from pole position. A few drivers showed initial intentions but thereafter faded out as Freddie dominated all heats with 3 straight victories. Freddie’s confidence was high as he went into the Sunday race starting pole in the prefinal.

The heavens open around Salbris Sunday morning as the teams scrabbled to change to the wet set ups. After an impressive practice session in the rain Freddie demonstrated great tyre management in the prefinal where he created a 6 second gap over the field. Dominating the prefinal meant Freddie was one step closer to achieving the overall win.

As the track dried for the final the team changed the kart back to the dry settings. Over 12 laps the final started and Freddie soon came under attack from others behind. Holding them off in an impressive last lap display gave Freddie the victory; as he punched the air he knew he had completed the European Championship in style! A complete set of wins. In the record books, Freddie is the only driver to win every race, achieving the maximum 267 championship points.
